U.S. President Donald Trump and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea leader’s Kim Jong Un are set to meet in Singapore on 12 June.
The White House confirmed the planned meeting earlier this year. It will mark the first meeting between a sitting U.S. President and any leader from the DPRK.
Trump announced the date following Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s return from Pyongyang with three freed American prisoners who had been held captive in North Korea.
Pompeo helped secure their release, while ironing out details of the summit.
Singapore has long been regarded as a gateway between Asia and the West, and currently remains a close ally to Washington and also hosts a US military presence.
It’s also one of just 47 countries to host a DPRK embassy.
Trump’s meeting with Kim comes following April talks between the DPRK leader and his Republic of Korea counterpart Moon Jae-in, which were hailed as being historic.
The United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres applauded the Korea summit and noted that many around the world were “moved by the powerful imagery,” according to a statement from his spokesman.
Ahead of the Trump – Kim meeting, Xinhua quotes the DPRK leader as saying, “I hope to build mutual trust with the U.S. through dialogue.”
